How Much Does Artificial Grass Cost?

Picture

The table above summarizes the itemized costs of synthetic turf yourself.

Rule of Thumb on Turf Cost
A good 'rule of thumb' to use is that it will cost 5-10 times more to install synthetic turf in your yard than it would cost you to install new sod.  For example, if you estimate that it will cost you $500 to sod your yard yourself. Synthetic turf will likely cost you somewhere between $2,500 and $5,000 to install it yourself.

Similarly, the same 'rule of thumb' holds true when comparing a professional sod installation versus a professional synthetic turf installation. For example, if it will cost you $800 to have a professional put sod your yard, synthetic turf will cost you somewhere between $4,000 and $8,000 to have it done professionally.

Yard Size MattersThe smaller your yard, the closer to the 10 to 1 relationship you will be. The larger your yard, the closer to the 5 to 1 relationship you will be.

Why is a Synthetic Lawn So More Expensive than Natural Grass?
  • Artificial grass material, which is designed to have a 10- to 20-year life expectancy, can cost 5 to 30 times more than sod.
  • Additional material costs of removing and disposing of additional grass / dirt in order to prepare for gravel base installation
  • Additional material costs of gravel materials
  • Additional material costs of nails, staples, tape, glue, edging
  • Additional costs of buying or renting additional equipment
  • Additional time, effort and resources need to plan for and properly install synthetic turf

Factors that Affect Artificial Grass Cost

Quality - Not all turfs are the same.  Although, we think some turfs are over priced in our opinion, generally, you usually get what you pay for.

Longevity - Some artificial grass is designed to last 20 years, some 10 years.

Weight - Total weight / face weight. Generally, the higher the weight the more material is used in making the turf and thus it's more expensive.

Source - Buying from a local installer or general landscaper, retail store, or from an out-of-state wholesaler, resaler / distributor

Quantity - Sometimes buying larger quantities will save you money.
