Common Mistakes to Avoid when Installing Artificial Grass

Top Common Mistakes to Avoid when Installing Artificial Grass

Do Not Roto-Till Your Yard - #1 Common Mistake
Never use a roto-tiller to remove your existing grass / dirt.

Applying a roto-tiller to your yard disturbs the soil at a depth much greater than where you need to go. And by disturbing this soil, you effectively 'destabilize' the dirt by creating many air pockets.

Instead, use a sod cutter. Using a sod cutter will allow you to smoothly slice out your existing grass / dirt in 1-inch or 2-inch layers without disturbing the soil beneath.

Never Use Pea Gravel as Your Base Material
Probably the #2 most common mistake is using pea gravel as a base material. Pea gravel stones have a smooth, round surface, which make them 'slip and slide' when compacted. Use crushed limestone or decomposed granite instead.

Crushed limestone stones 'interlock' with one another when compacted.

Don't Measure Short
Seems obvious right? Well, it's amazing how easy it is to 'measure short' when trying to minimize wasted turf. The best way to not measure short is to measure more than once and in multiple directions while conducting your site assessment.

Do Not Make Multiple Turf Orders for the Same Area
If you ordered turf yesterday and again place another turf order today for the same product, same color, you may get different color turfs. That's because turf color often varies from one production 'batch' or run to another. That's why you want to avoid the pitfall of ordering turf multiple times for the same lawn area.

Measure your entire turf area.  Then order enough turf to cover the entire area. Do this even if you only do a partial installation today. Later, when you decide to do the rest of the installation, you'll have exactly the same turf!

Don't Run Turf in Different Directions
Once you start installing patterned wall paper, would you change the direction of the wall paper mid-way through your installation?  Of course, not.  Why?  Because doing so, will obviously change the direction of the pattern.

Similarly, because artificial turf has a 'grain' to it, once you start installing your synthetic turf, do not change its direction.  Running your turf in more than one direction will change the direction of the grain or 'pattern' of the turf.  Doing so, will result in a 'disjointed' lawn look.
